The problem with character names

A dirty secret: I’m terrible at creating character names. I freeze up and overthink it, trying to come up with something that avoids the trappings of cheap symbolism (oh, Cast Away and your “Chuck Noland”) and doesn’t use the names of friends, family, or past acquaintances (I’m terrified of this, even though I know nobody will ever ask “hey, was that character supposed to be me?”) I freak out over every syllable, preventing me from moving forward whenever I have a scene where a new character enters. Welcome to the world of Inhumanwich!

So this is it: we’re making a movie, and we’re calling it Inhumanwich! You’re welcome.

Isn’t it a bit premature to start a blog when the script hasn’t been started? Actually, that’s kind of the point. Not only will this blog allow you to stay up to date with every single step in the development process – a complete diary of a production from idea to final product – it’ll also serve to keep me focused and actually working. A public record of my own procrastination, so to speak.

So sit back and enjoy. But beware: Inhumanwich lurks behind every dark corner, and he’s hungry…
